MCDONALD’S AND THE MINIMUM WAGE Introduction Minimum wage has always been, and will probably always be, a controversial topic. Some believe raising the minimum wage is the solution to poverty, while others believe that raising the minimum wage is a recipe for â€Å"killing† jobs. This age old debate has come to the forefront recently as the â€Å"Fight for $15† by fast-food workers continues to grow. The campaign’s core argument is that the billion-dollar companies in the fast-food industry can afford to pay their employees better to ensure their employees make enough money to support their families and cover basic necessities such as food, health care, rent, and transportation. McDonald’s is one of the billion-dollar companies that the campaign is targeting and fighting against and, therefore, McDonalds has taken significant heat lately about their decisions to keep their wages low. Thus, the debate is, should McDonald’s raise their minimum wage to at least 15 dollars for all employees? McDonald’s’ Consequences of Raising its Minimum Wage As mentioned earlier, raising the minimum wage is one possible factor in decreasing the number of individuals below the poverty level. In that sense, it would be a socially responsible decision for McDonald’s to raise its wages. Elder Abuse, a type of domestic violence, is a under recognized problem within the United States and West Virginia. Elder abuse is the intentional or neglectful acts by a caregiver or trusted loved ones that leads to or might lead to the harm of a vulnerable elder (National Center on Elder Abuse, 2012). Throughout the United States elder abuse is on the rise because there are more baby boomers and not enough health care professionals that specialize in elder care or family members that want to take on the responsibility of an elder. There are a few problems facing the elderly; one problem that is facing the elderly is that there has not been much research done in regard to elder abuse; second, there are beginning to be more elders than specialized health care workers so elders are not getting the care that they need; third, the laws concerning elder abuse are vague and most elders do not know their rights and services that could help them and their family. Elder abuse began to be a recognized problem around the 1970s, but it is still behind child abuse and domestic violence by at least twenty to forty years. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, elder abuse was considered a family issue that was to be taken care of by the family, just like child abuse.
